Since launching Operation Baghdad Pups (www.baghdadpups.com) in November 2007, Bold New World has helped the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International (SPCA International) raise global awareness of the effects of war on adopted pets in combatant territories. In September, SPCA was contacted by a unit desperately trying to get their mascot out of Baghdad, his name is Charlie and his story started it all..
One night after a routine patrol, Charlie Company returned with a puppy in tow. No bigger than a potato, he was starving, shaking and infested with fleas and ticks. Certain the little guy would not last the night, the unit tried to provide him relief and comfort. The night guard took the puppy, wrapped him in a blanket, gave him clean water and leftover MREs. To the unit's surprise, the puppy gained strength and began to grow. Having proved himself a fighter and survivor, the pup was soon declared unit mascot and named Charlie..
Since then, Charlie has become a four-legged morale booster. Brought back from the brink of death, Charlie represents hope and stands as a living symbol of the power of love and compassion over war and despair. "This little guy means so much to me, as well as a lot of the other soldiers I work with," says a soldier. .
Charlie is just one example of the amazing bond formed between soldiers and companion animals. There are many other unit mascots in similar trouble, so SPCA International founded Operation Baghdad Pups (www.baghdadpups.com) to help bring more home. .
